Asian Academy Creative Awards UpdateLatest NewsPress Releases

SINGAPORE December 8th, 2023:

Singapore’s historic Capitol Theatre has been announced as the host of the prestigious Asian Academy Creative Awards, commencing in 2024.

The beautifully restored Capitol Theatre is part of Capitol Singapore, a landmark integrated development situated in the heart of Singapore’s Civic District owned by Perennial Holdings Private Limited (“Perennial Holdings”). Capitol Singapore comprises the Capitol Theatre, a premier retail mall, the luxurious Eden Residences Capitol, the ultra-luxury The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore and the Arcade @ The Capitol Kempinski, a sunlit atrium hosting a series of modern and classical dining establishments. Capitol Singapore is also home to three iconic conservation buildings: Stamford House, Capitol Building and Capitol Theatre.

The announcement was made by Asian Academy Creative Arts Chairman of Awards, Mr. Clement Schwebig, who acknowledged Perennial Holdings’ support as Venue Partner and the presence of its Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Pua Seck Guan during last evening’s Gala Awards ceremony.

“Tonight, Mr Pua has announced a multi-year agreement that will see Singapore’s heritage Capitol Theatre as the host of the Asian Academy Creative Awards, for years to come”, Mr. Schwebig announced.

“This is wonderful news for the awards and for Singapore and we, as an entire industry, want to thank Perennial Holdings for its support” said Mr. Schwebig who now completes his honorary Chairmanship, having been announced as Warner Bros. Discovery’s President Western Europe & Africa.

Not only does the agreement anchor the film and TV ceremonies and its glittering red carpet in Singapore for the foreseeable future, but the Capitol Singapore precinct will become a hub of creativity, networking and socialising.

Mr. Pua later commented “I’m delighted that Capitol Theatre will become the host of the Asian Academy Creative Awards, it’s a wonderful connection that honours the theatre’s heritage”.

The neoclassical Capitol Theatre built in 1929, is an architectural and heritage treasure. Boasting an iconic Art Deco entrance facade, a domed roof with twelve zodiac signs and winged horses flanking both sides of the stage, it was one of Singapore’s premier cinemas in the 1950s and 1960s and also hosted live variety shows in the 1960s to 1980s, which featured popular artistes like Sakura Teng and Rita Chao.

After extensive and careful restoration works undertaken by Perennial Holdings, Capitol Theatre is now a destination of choice for elite performances and events and houses one of the largest single screens with over 970 plush seats in Southeast Asia. It is also the first in Southeast Asia to feature an advanced rotational floor system that allows for flexible seating configurations, and Singapore’s first venue with direct ground level red-carpet access to the theatre, providing a grand and glamorous entrance, befitting for the event.

AACA President, Emmy Award winning producer Michael McKay, has previously proclaimed a love of historic theatres “Capitol Theatre is the natural host of the Awards, it’s been a part of the film and entertainment industry for almost 100 years, so 2024 will be a big homecoming celebration” he promised.

Following the announcement Gala Awards host Bobby Tonelli told the audience “That is amazing news, Capitol Theatre is a beautiful venue and, from 2024, the host of the Asian Academy Creative Awards”.

AACA CEO Fiona McKay confirmed the awards will return to its traditional 2-night format, as part of a three-day event, in early December 2024.
